Panel on the Impacts of Racial Discrimination on Women of Colour

Please join us March 16th at 2:00 p.m. for a live panel in honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, put on by the Women's Health Interest Group.

The panel discussion will focus on the ways in which racial discrimination impact racialized women's physical and mental health, how this has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, what is being done to advocate and combat health disparities, and how to move forward towards better health equity for women of colour.

Panelists include Crystal Watson, Leah Carrier, Dr. Barb Hamilton-Hinch, María José Yax-Fraser, and Masuma Khan. The event will be moderated by Liane Khoury.

November Seminar

Our regular seminars are back! Join us on November 26th from 12-1 for two student presentations on research related to sexualized violence in Nova Scotia.

Clare Heggie is a recent graduate of the MA Health Promotion program at Dal. She is currently a school health promoter at the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education. She is interested in sexual and reproductive health, maternal health, and promoting health in rural communities. Her presentation is titled: Accessing sexualized violence services and supports: Exploring the perspectives of women living in a rural place.

Brittany Matchett is a first-year MA student in Health Promotion and a recent Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion (Honours) graduate at Dal. Her research interests includes sexual health promotion, specifically sexual consent communication and sexual violence. Her presentation is titled: Sexualized violence: The importance of consent, labels, & prominent discourses towards university student’s attitudes, opinions, & beliefs.

Are healthcare and incarceration compatible? Women's experiences seeking care inside prisons

The Women’s Health Interest Group, in collaboration with the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health Trainee Network, are hosting a lunch and learn event featuring Martha Paynter and Sarah Tessier, who will be speaking about women’s experiences seeking care inside of prisons.

Martha Paynter is a registered nurse and the founder of Women’s Wellness Within. Her doctoral research examines the maternal health outcomes of federally incarcerated women.

Sara Tessier is an advocate for people experiencing incarceration. She will share her experience about the federal prison system.

The event will be held on February 25th from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in the CHEB, room 266. This room and building are accessible. Lunch will be provided!
